Chambered Nautilus

Nautilus pompilius L.

Once dominating the ancient seas of the world, the genus Nautilus is now limited to fewer than a half dozen living species, all found in the southwestern Pacific. Dead shells float as far away as East Africa and Japan. The animal has about 90 tentacles. The chambers are filled with gas and keep the creature balanced in midwater.
